Grafting Experience -Avocado to begin with...

Many of you have asked me how am I having successful Plant Grafts. Well, probably it's experience. The first step  is to learn and practice grating techniques, get right grafting tools (most of them available on the internet such as amazon.com). Practice again and again...Eventually you will be mastering this art. When I get a chance certainly I will do videos of my next grafting and update on my blog sites or YouTube.

I have been posting some of my photos on websites like cloudforest.com, getting interests from family members, friends, and distant unknown fans. For all of you I have created and uploaded 500+ photos of my work, garden at my Facebook Page www.facebook.com/PenchysGardenGraftingPhotos. I have also leaned that it's better to have my own website and post my activities. Note: It's dirt cheap to buy domains  at  www.godaddy.com or www.networksolutions.com etc.) I can include these blogs and update at my own pace.

It was my hobby from my childhood to work in my parents garden. They had lots of plants. During the rainy season I used  to work in the backyard and front yard. I used to grow lots and lots of vegetables. My interest playing in the garden increased as I grew older. Having tried several unsuccessful grafts during childhood, failures made me more curious and that forced me to try again and again and finally had a success on croton plants.

During high school, college days had to go out of home and there was not much of gardening work, although I was enjoying collage campus plants. Worked in Bangalore for several years and had little time to spend on gardening as I was renting home.

Years later moved to San Jose, USA, bought home, primary 3 important things for me before buying home is 1) BIG yard (front or back) 2) location and 3) school district. My idea was to grow lots and lots of fruit trees around my home, vegetables and a beautiful flower garden. Soon after we bought the house we grew lots of vegetables, in fact it was excessive and we had to share it with my neighbors, friends and other families.

Soon after I realized that I can grow several fruit plants for the local weather condition. Bought some of them with the idea that I can graft several other same species so that I can relish all my favorite fruits, fresh from garden! However there was difficult to carve out some time during the weekdays with my busy work schedule. So I was forced t make Grafting is one of my weekend hobbies and I wanted it to be like that as I need lots of focus to get all these grafts right and I should be sensitive to various conditions. I think these were some of the reasons I've had tremendous success.

Now I have a Granny Apple tree, which gives about 6 different apples, a Pear tree give 4 different types of pears, Rose  has around 10 different colored roses and finally an Avocado tree has about 7-8 different types avocados. My wife grew a avocado plant from seedling, about 3 years later it was  roughly about 10 ft tall. I came to know that such tree usually takes about 10 years to flower make fruits. Hence i  decided to graft with many different versions of plants. I have taken numerous pictures during these grafting periods and will post them soon. Most of the grafts are successful and the tree has lots and lots of flowers this season, keeping my fingers crossed to see at least one each type of avocado. I was told I should not let the plant fruit in the first season as the growth of the tree stalls but I am curious to see few fruits.

It’s been exactly year since I started my first experiment on my Avocado tree. I have used couple of small branches from the bottom of the tree and did veneer grafting. I  was not sure of the parafilm tape then. Without parafilm I had covered the graft with just white grafting tape. I guess, was lucky  to see growth on the bud wood after about 4 weeks.

This 3rd picture was taken to demonstrate how the original branch and bud wood (scion) the branches were fused. Its recommended that one should not expose this to sun and get sun burn, subsequently I have covered the branch with white grafting tape and the branch grow.

I have also uploaded numerous, stage by stage grafting propagation at www.facebook.com/PenchysGardenGraftingPhotos.

As I mentioned I will post additional photos since some of you want to see the progress of these grafts. Check out my Facebook Fan Page for photos of my garden vegetables, flowers and grafts. I have also created a website for my Organic Garden interests, will add more photos as we progress.
